Ludhiana's Doublothon 2026 Successfully Combines Fitness with Environmental Advocacy
In a vibrant celebration of World Water Day 2026, the Ludhiana Municipal Corporation, operating through Ludhiana Urban Water and Wastewater Management Limited, orchestrated a groundbreaking event titled "Doublothon 2026." This innovative initiative seamlessly blended physical fitness with crucial environmental consciousness, drawing enthusiastic participation from the community.
Event Overview and Participation
The Doublothon kicked off from the rear of the MC Zone D office in Sarabha Nagar, attracting over 250 residents spanning all age demographics. The event featured two main components: a challenging 10-kilometer cycling route and a 4-kilometer running path that traced the scenic Sidhwan canal. This dual approach not only promoted an active and healthy lifestyle but also served as a powerful platform to disseminate vital information about water conservation practices.
Key officials, including Communication Specialist Jaspreet Singh and Assistant Engineer Jaideep Singh, emphasized that the event was conducted under the direct guidance of Mayor Inderjit Kaur and MC Commissioner Neeru Katyal Gupta. Their leadership ensured the initiative's alignment with broader municipal goals for sustainable urban development.
Educational Component and Infrastructure Project
During the Doublothon, participants were briefed on a significant ongoing infrastructure project: the canal-based water supply scheme funded by the World Bank and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB). This ambitious project aims to provide treated surface water directly to households, enhancing the city's water security.
The first phase of this project is currently in progress, involving the construction of a world-class water treatment plant (WTP) in Bilga village near Sahnewal, alongside extensive infrastructure development across Ludhiana. An interactive session allowed officials to engage directly with attendees, including NGO representatives and BK Rampal, who represented Councillor Amrit Varsha Rampal.
