YouTuber 'Tamil Trekker' Witnesses Missiles Over Kuwait Amid Flight Chaos

A Bhuvanidharan, a popular YouTuber known by his alias 'Tamil Trekker', found himself stranded in the United States after his scheduled flight to India was abruptly cancelled. This disruption occurred amidst escalating tensions and military actions in West Asia, including reported attacks between Israel and Iran, and security alerts across Gulf nations such as Kuwait, Bahrain, Dubai, and Doha.

Costly Journey and Tense Mid-Flight Encounter

Determined to return home to Chennai, Bhuvanidharan booked an alternative flight with Air India, paying nearly double his original fare. The flight included a technical stop in Vienna before continuing towards Mumbai. During the leg over Kuwait, he experienced a harrowing moment. "It was night, and most passengers were asleep. I was recording a video for my YouTube channel when I felt the aircraft swerve slightly. The in-flight map display was switched off," he recounted. Bhuvanidharan claims he saw missiles streak past the aircraft while overflying Kuwait, adding to the anxiety of an already stressful journey.

Travel Disruptions and Stranded Passengers

Bhuvanidharan, who also operates a travel company called Tripate, had initially booked a return ticket via Abu Dhabi. "After the conflict escalated, the situation appeared uncertain. I decided not to take chances and booked another flight," he explained. His experience reflects a broader crisis, with numerous business delegations, honeymooners, and tourists stranded in the US and West Asia. Conversely, foreign tourists are stuck in India, particularly in Chennai, due to widespread flight cancellations.

Sriharan Balan, managing director of Madura Travels, highlighted the challenges. "Some travellers are willing to postpone their plans since airlines permitted date changes. But many are eager to return at the earliest," he said. Travel agencies are arranging circuitous routes, such as US–Hong Kong–India, to assist stranded individuals. However, these alternatives are significantly more expensive, and refunds for cancelled tickets are expected to take considerable time. Balan added that many passengers have cancelled planned trips from India to the US, Turkey, and West Asian destinations, further complicating travel logistics.

Community Response and Helpline Overload

The Non-Resident Tamils (NRT) welfare board has been inundated with nearly 1,000 calls over the past two days. These calls primarily come from anxious relatives in Tamil Nadu, enquiring about flight availability and seeking assistance in bringing family members home safely. Officials noted that many callers were distressed by reports of missile attacks and security alerts in Gulf nations.

"Our helpline operators, in many cases, became counsellors, reassuring families, providing verified updates, and highlighting that Indian embassies are closely monitoring the situation," a senior board official stated. This underscores the emotional toll and widespread concern triggered by the geopolitical instability in West Asia.

The incident involving Bhuvanidharan serves as a stark reminder of how international conflicts can directly impact civilian travel, leading to financial strain, safety fears, and logistical nightmares for thousands of passengers worldwide.
