Thirteen Bangladeshi Fishermen Apprehended Off Andhra Coast
In a recent maritime incident, the coastal security police in Srikakulam district have detained 13 fishermen from Bangladesh for allegedly entering Indian territorial waters. The event unfolded near the Mosavanipeta coast in Etcherla mandal, drawing attention to the challenges of navigation in the region.
Rescue and Initial Investigation
According to preliminary investigations, the group of fishermen hails from the Bhola district in Bangladesh. Officials stated that the fishermen had departed from their local fishing harbour but inadvertently crossed the international maritime boundary. This navigational error is attributed to adverse sea weather conditions that affected their journey.
The situation came to light on Sunday when local Indian fishermen spotted the stranded Bangladeshi vessel after it had anchored near the coast. The Bangladeshi fishermen sought assistance, prompting a swift response from the local community. The Indian locals not only rescued them but also provided essential aid, including food and fluids to those who were feeling unwell, demonstrating humanitarian concern before alerting the authorities.
Official Response and Next Steps
Subsequently, the coastal security police took the 13 fishermen into custody. They were relocated to Kalingapatnam for a more thorough investigation. Police officials confirmed that they will be informing senior authorities in the home department about the detention.
Given that the incident involves cross-border relations, the Andhra Pradesh government is set to communicate with the Union Home Ministry to determine the future course of action. This case is particularly sensitive as it follows a similar event from October this year, where eight fishermen from Vizianagaram district in Andhra Pradesh were taken into custody by Bangladeshi authorities after they too strayed into foreign waters.
