External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Thursday said that the BRICS grouping can play a crucial role in helping countries facing challenges related to energy supplies, food security, and health security. Speaking at a virtual event, Jaishankar emphasized the importance of multilateral cooperation in addressing global issues.
BRICS as a Platform for Cooperation
Jaishankar noted that BRICS, comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, has the potential to provide solutions to nations struggling with essential supplies. He highlighted that the bloc's collective strength can be leveraged to ensure stable energy markets, adequate food production, and robust healthcare systems.
Energy Security Concerns
On energy, Jaishankar pointed out that disruptions in supply chains have led to volatility in prices, affecting both developed and developing economies. BRICS nations, being major producers and consumers of energy, can collaborate to stabilize markets and promote sustainable energy transitions.
Food Security Initiatives
Regarding food security, the minister stressed the need for coordinated efforts to enhance agricultural productivity and reduce wastage. He called for sharing of best practices and technologies among BRICS members to ensure food availability for all.
Health Security Collaboration
In the health sector, Jaishankar underscored the importance of joint research and development of vaccines, therapeutics, and diagnostics. He cited the COVID-19 pandemic as a reminder of the need for global health preparedness and response mechanisms.
India's Role in BRICS
Jaishankar reiterated India's commitment to the BRICS framework and its willingness to contribute to global stability. He said that India's experiences in managing its own challenges can be valuable for other nations.
The minister concluded by urging BRICS members to work together to build a more resilient and equitable world order.
