INSV Kaundinya's Maiden Voyage Sparks Call for Kaundinya as Father of Indian Merchant Navy
Call to Declare Kaundinya Father of Indian Merchant Navy

The INSV Kaundinya recently completed its first voyage from Porbandar to Muscat. This vessel carries the name of Kaundinya, a prince from ancient Kalinga. Kaundinya played a crucial role in the early history of Indian migration and maritime activity.

Veteran Naval Officer Advocates for Historical Recognition

Bidyadhar Nayak, a former officer of the Indian Navy and the current president of the Veterans Club Odisha, has made a strong appeal. He believes Kaundinya of Kalinga deserves official national recognition.

"Kaundinya of Kalinga should officially be recognised and declared as the 'Father of the Indian merchant navy'," Nayak stated emphatically. "He symbolises India's earliest organised maritime trade."

A Formal Request to the Government

Nayak has taken concrete action to support his call. He recently wrote a formal letter to Odisha's Chief Minister, Mohan Charan Majhi. In the letter, he urges the state leader to press the Union government on this matter.

The core request is clear. Nayak wants the central government to officially declare the ancient prince Kaundinya as the 'Father of the Indian Merchant Navy'. This recognition would honor his foundational role in India's seafaring and trade history.

The naming of the naval vessel INSV Kaundinya has brought renewed attention to this historical figure. It highlights the deep and enduring maritime connections of India's eastern coast, particularly the region of ancient Kalinga.
