The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has strongly objected to the Telangana government's decision to rename the road adjoining the US Consulate in Hyderabad in honor of US President Donald Trump. The move, led by Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, has drawn sharp criticism from the CPM, which accused both the BJP and the Congress of compromising India's sovereignty.
CPM's Strong Objection
CPM General Secretary MA Baby expressed his outrage on Wednesday, stating, "BJP has no qualms about surrendering India's sovereignty and self-respect, and now it seems that neither does the Congress government in Telangana." In a social media post, Baby shared a screenshot of a news report indicating that Chief Minister Revanth Reddy will inaugurate the renamed road on June 23. He urged the Congress high command to intervene and withdraw what he termed an "outrageous move."
Context of the Renaming
The CPM leader highlighted the irony of honoring Trump at a time when the US is engaged in aggressive actions globally. "At a time when the belligerent US is in the midst of a war against Iran, a genocide in Gaza, military intervention in Venezuela, and a criminal stranglehold on Cuba, CM Reddy is renaming the road adjoining the US Consulate in Hyderabad to honor Trump," Baby said. He emphasized that the claims of carrying on the ideals of India's anti-imperialist resistance movement must not be limited to words.
Political Reactions
The announcement has sparked a political debate in Telangana, with opposition parties criticizing the Congress government for what they see as a sycophantic gesture towards a foreign leader. The CPM's statement adds to the growing chorus of disapproval from leftist and secular parties, who argue that such actions undermine India's independent foreign policy.
