Railway Ministry Initiates Feasibility Study for Dadar-Ratnagiri Passenger Train Restoration
In a significant development for Konkan-bound commuters, the long-standing demand to restore the Dadar-Ratnagiri passenger train has taken a concrete step forward. The Railway Ministry has officially ordered an operational feasibility study to examine the possibility of restarting this crucial Konkan service from Dadar station.
Political Representation Sparks Action
The move comes directly in response to a formal representation made by Shiv Sena Member of Parliament Ravindra Waikar. Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has personally directed railway officials to conduct a comprehensive assessment. The specific focus will be whether the existing Diva-Ratnagiri passenger service can be reverted to its original Dadar origin, restoring the direct connectivity that was lost.
Historical Context and Commuter Discontent
The Dadar-Ratnagiri passenger train was once the preferred travel option for thousands of Konkan-bound passengers from south Mumbai and western suburbs, including areas like Dahisar and Borivli. This vital service was unfortunately discontinued during the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020. It was replaced by the Diva-Ratnagiri passenger train, forcing commuters to first travel to Diva station to board their Konkan-bound train.
This change has led to persistent and widespread resentment among both Konkan residents and daily passengers, who have faced increased travel time and inconvenience for over four years. The demand for restoration gained further momentum when the railways regularized the Dadar-Gorakhpur special train, while the Dadar-origin Konkan service remained suspended. This disparity prompted renewed and vigorous advocacy from commuter groups, Konkan organizations, and elected representatives from both Mumbai and the coastal belt.
Scope of the Operational Feasibility Study
In his official reply to MP Waikar, Minister Vaishnaw confirmed that the demand has been taken on record in the interest of passenger convenience. He stated that officials have been tasked with conducting a thorough operational feasibility assessment before any final decision is made. The comprehensive study will examine several critical factors:
- Platform Availability at Dadar: Assessing whether Dadar station has the necessary platform capacity and infrastructure to accommodate the restored service.
- Timetable Integration: Evaluating how to seamlessly integrate the Dadar-Ratnagiri train into the existing complex railway schedule.
- Technical Constraints: Identifying any operational or technical hurdles that might impede the restoration.
- Impact on Suburban Services: Analyzing the potential effect on Mumbai's dense suburban local train network, a primary concern historically.
The findings of this assessment will be compiled into a detailed report and submitted to the Railway Ministry for review. Notably, no specific deadline has been set for the completion of this exercise.
Past Operational Hurdles and Current Advocacy
Central Railway had previously cited significant operational challenges as the reason for the 2020 shift from Dadar to Diva. Officials argued that a Ratnagiri-bound train originating from Dadar would need to cross suburban tracks near Diva junction. This crossing was estimated to potentially affect six to eight local train services, thereby hurting the overall punctuality of Mumbai's critical suburban network.
Despite these past concerns, commuters and advocates continue to press strongly for the train's return to Dadar. They argue that Dadar station's unparalleled direct connectivity to both the Central Railway and Western Railway networks makes it far more convenient and accessible than Diva for the vast majority of Konkan-bound passengers. The restoration is seen not just as a service revival, but as a restoration of essential connectivity for the region.
