Director General of Police (DGP) of Jammu and Kashmir, Nalin Prabhat, on Monday chaired a comprehensive Security Review Meeting (SRM) to evaluate counter-insurgency measures and security arrangements for the forthcoming Shri Amarnathji Yatra 2026 (SANJY-2026). The meeting was attended by senior officers from all formations deployed in South Kashmir, including Victor Force, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Border Security Force (BSF), and Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), according to a police spokesman.
Detailed Presentations by District SSPs
All Senior Superintendents of Police (SSPs) from the concerned districts delivered detailed presentations covering the prevailing security scenario, counter-insurgency operational measures, and the multi-layered security grid being implemented for the Yatra. The DGP reviewed the operational preparedness of all formations and emphasized the need for synergy among security agencies to ensure the safe and smooth conduct of the annual pilgrimage.
Yatra Dates and Routes
The 57-day Amarnath Yatra is scheduled to commence on July 3 and conclude on August 28, coinciding with Raksha Bandhan. Pilgrims will travel via two routes: the traditional 48-km Nunwan-Pahalgam track in Anantnag district and the shorter but steeper 14-km Baltal track in Ganderbal district.
Security Grid and Counter-Insurgency Focus
The meeting underscored the importance of a robust security grid to counter any potential threats, with a particular focus on South Kashmir, which has historically been a region of concern. The DGP directed all agencies to maintain high vigilance and coordinate closely to prevent any disruption during the pilgrimage. The multi-layered security arrangement includes ground patrols, aerial surveillance, and intelligence sharing among forces.
“The DGP reviewed the counter-insurgency measures and arrangements for the upcoming Amarnath Yatra,” the spokesman stated, highlighting the proactive approach taken by the police and security forces to ensure the safety of pilgrims. The review comes amid ongoing efforts to stabilize the region and facilitate a peaceful religious event.
