Four Key Indian Airports to Face Temporary Shutdowns for Runway Recarpeting
The Indian Air Force (IAF) has announced that four civil airports under its control will experience temporary shutdowns this year. This is due to essential runway recarpeting work required to ensure smooth and safe operations for both military and civilian aircraft. The affected airports include Jodhpur, Srinagar, Pune, and Adampur, with each facing disruptions according to different schedules.
Detailed Shutdown Schedules and Impact on Flights
Starting with Jodhpur airport, the IAF has issued a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) for runway recarpeting. Civilian flight operations at this airport will be suspended for nearly a month, from March 29 to April 27. The recarpeting project will be carried out in three phases, with the final phase expected to be completed by May. Major airlines such as IndiGo, Air India, and Air India Express have already suspended bookings for flights after March 28 in response to this closure.
For Srinagar airport, disruptions are scheduled on weekends from August through mid-October. Pune airport is anticipated to face operational disruptions later in the year, with specific details to be announced in due course. Adampur air base in Punjab, a critical facility near the Pakistan border, will undergo runway adjustments after November.
Strategic Importance and Maintenance Requirements
All four airports are joint-user facilities, meaning they serve both civil and military purposes. This dual role necessitates that runway surfaces meet the stringent technical requirements of fighter jets and other military aircraft. Regular maintenance, including recarpeting, is essential to maintain operational readiness and safety standards.
The strategic significance of these airports, particularly Jodhpur and Adampur due to their proximity to the Pakistan border, underscores the importance of these upgrades. For instance, Adampur air base played a pivotal role during Operation Sindoor and was recently reviewed by IAF chief Air Chief Marshal A P Singh for operational preparedness.
Broader Implications for Air Travel and Security
The temporary shutdowns highlight the ongoing efforts to enhance India's aviation infrastructure while balancing military and civilian needs. Passengers planning to travel through these airports during the affected periods are advised to check with airlines for alternative arrangements and updated schedules.
This recarpeting initiative is part of a broader maintenance strategy to ensure that India's airbases remain capable of supporting both defense operations and commercial air travel efficiently and safely.
