Goa Authorities Conduct Site Inspection of Alleged Illegal Structures in Candolim
Officials from the Goa Coastal Zone Management Authority (GCZMA) and the Goa State Biodiversity Board carried out a detailed site inspection on Friday in Candolim, focusing on alleged illegal structures. This inspection targeted a portion of a larger property that was previously known as 'Kingfisher Villa'. The action was initiated in response to a formal complaint lodged by the Calangute Constituency Forum (CCF) in June of last year.
Fourth Inspection by GCZMA Highlights Ongoing Issues
Agnelo Barreto, the president of the Calangute Constituency Forum, confirmed that this marks the fourth inspection conducted by the GCZMA at the site. He emphasized that despite previous inspections, the owners have failed to comply with directives to remove the illegal structures and restore the sand dunes, as mandated by the authorities.
High Court Directive and Demolition Demands
In a significant development last month, the Bombay High Court issued a directive ordering the GCZMA to enforce its previous orders and proceed with the demolition of illegal constructions. The citizens forum has been actively advocating for the complete demolition of all structures at these sites, along with the clearance of debris and restoration of the land to its original condition.
Biodiversity Board Recommendations for Site Restoration
Based on advice from the Goa Biodiversity Board, specific recommendations have been made to address the environmental impact. These include the removal of all debris, construction materials, and bamboo barriers from the site. Following this cleanup, the board suggests planting suitable flora to rehabilitate the area and promote biodiversity conservation.
