Greater Noida West Residents Stage Protest Over Metro Extension Delays
In a dramatic display of frustration, residents of Greater Noida West organized a protest on Sunday near the final Metro pillar at the Sector-71 intersection. The demonstration was a direct response to the Central government's recent decision to reject the detailed project report (DPR) for the proposed Metro extension, marking yet another setback for the long-awaited project.
Symbolic Action Highlights Urgent Demand
Protesters, raising slogans such as "Approval ka kaise khel, kab ayegi metro rail... Greno West ki janta karey pukar, kab ayegi metro rail," used ropes to symbolically "pull" the Metro pillar towards their locality. This creative act underscored their desperate plea for improved connectivity and highlighted the community's growing impatience with bureaucratic delays.
Widespread Participation and Deepening Frustration
The protest was coordinated by the Noida Extension Flat Owners Welfare Association (NEFOWA) and saw involvement from various residents' welfare groups, village associations, and citizen bodies. Participants expressed that repeated cancellations of the DPR have exacerbated frustration among the region's population, which now exceeds three lakh people. They pointed to severe daily traffic congestion and the absence of a reliable public transport system as critical issues.
Residents Voice Concerns Over Infrastructure Neglect
Demonstrators appealed to both Central and State governments to prioritize the Metro project, emphasizing that it is a necessity rather than a luxury. Alok Kumar of the Active Citizens' Group stated, "This region is developing rapidly, yet the lack of basic infrastructure remains a matter of grave concern. The absence of public transportation is adversely affecting people's daily lives. The government must now move beyond mere assurances and take concrete action."
Ranjan Tomar, president of the Noida Village Residents Association, added, "The lack of public transport causes difficulties for both the urban population and residents of the villages. Therefore, our collective demand is that work on the Metro project must commence as soon as possible."
NEFOWA President Issues Warning of Escalated Protests
Abhishek Kumar, president of NEFOWA, highlighted the ongoing injustice faced by residents, saying, "The residents of Greater Noida West are facing continuous injustice. The repeated cancellation of the DPR is extremely unfortunate. The daily hardships faced by hundreds of thousands of people are being completely ignored. We demand that the government grant approval to the Metro project as soon as possible and initiate the construction work." He warned that if no action is taken, protests would intensify, with plans for a mass demonstration at Jantar Mantar on April 26.
Background on the Metro Extension Project
The DPR for the 7.5-km Metro extension from Noida Sector-51 to Greater Noida West was rejected on April 3 on technical grounds. This rejection necessitates a fresh submission, further delaying a project that has been in the planning stages for over a decade. Residents lament that despite numerous assurances, there has been no visible progress on the ground, leaving them to cope with worsening infrastructure challenges.
The protest serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for improved public transportation in rapidly growing urban areas, calling for immediate governmental intervention to address the connectivity crisis in Greater Noida West.
