India and Azerbaijan Hold High-Level Talks in Baku to Strengthen Bilateral Relations
In a significant diplomatic engagement, Sibi George, the Secretary (West) of India's Ministry of External Affairs, called on Azerbaijan's Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov in Baku on Friday. The meeting focused on a comprehensive review of bilateral ties, with both sides exchanging views on regional and global matters of mutual interest.
Efforts to Mend Strained Relations
The talks are widely seen as an attempt by both nations to mend their relationship, which has faced challenges due to differences over Azerbaijan's ties with Pakistan. Specifically, tensions arose when Baku backed Islamabad during India's Operation Sindoor last year, creating diplomatic friction. This meeting represents a proactive step toward reconciliation and rebuilding trust between the two countries.
Sixth Round of Foreign Office Consultations
Concurrently, the 6th round of India-Azerbaijan Foreign Office Consultations was held in Baku. Sibi George co-chaired the discussions with Elnur Mammadov, Azerbaijan's Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs. According to a statement from the Ministry of External Affairs, the consultations involved a thorough review of the current state of bilateral relations, covering a wide range of areas of mutual interest.
The key issues discussed during the talks included:
- Trade and economic cooperation
- Technology and innovation partnerships
- Tourism and cultural exchanges
- Pharmaceuticals and healthcare collaboration
- Energy security and sustainable development
- Cultural ties and people-to-people exchanges
- Joint efforts in combating cross-border terrorism
The MEA emphasized that both sides engaged in productive dialogue, exploring opportunities to enhance collaboration across these sectors. The discussions underscored a shared commitment to addressing common challenges and fostering a more robust bilateral framework.
Agreement on Future Engagements
In a positive development, India and Azerbaijan agreed to hold the next round of foreign office consultations in New Delhi. This decision highlights the mutual desire to maintain regular diplomatic engagement and build on the progress made during the Baku meetings. The upcoming talks are expected to further solidify the partnership and address any lingering issues from past disagreements.
The diplomatic outreach in Baku marks a crucial moment in India-Azerbaijan relations, as both nations work to overcome historical differences and forge a stronger, more cooperative relationship in the face of evolving regional dynamics.
