BIMSTEC Secretariat Applauds India's New Leadership Role in Business Council
The BIMSTEC Secretariat has officially welcomed the launch of India's leadership of the BIMSTEC Business Council, a significant development aimed at strengthening economic ties across the Bay of Bengal region. This initiative, spearheaded by the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM), marks a pivotal step toward deepening intra-BIMSTEC trade and investment by enhancing business-to-business relations, according to a recent release.
Strategic Agenda Focused on Core Pillars
The new leadership under India has established a strategic agenda centered on three key pillars: Trade Facilitation, Multi-modal Connectivity, and MSME Cooperation. These priorities are closely aligned with the BIMSTEC 'Bangkok Vision 2030,' which seeks to transform the Bay of Bengal into a resilient, open, and prosperous region. By focusing on these areas, the council aims to streamline trade processes, improve transportation links, and support small and medium enterprises, thereby fostering sustainable economic growth.
Bangladesh's Crucial Role in Trade and Development
Bangladesh, serving as the Lead Member State for cooperation in the Trade, Investment, and Development Sector under BIMSTEC, plays a vital role in enhancing business-to-business exchanges and dialogues. The release emphasized that Bangladesh's involvement is essential for driving collaborative efforts and ensuring the success of regional initiatives, contributing to a more integrated and dynamic economic landscape.
Key Statements from Leaders and Officials
During the launch event, BIMSTEC Secretary General Indra Mani Pandey highlighted the importance of business-to-business relations in boosting intra-BIMSTEC trade and investment. He announced plans to launch the BIMSTEC Chamber of Commerce and Industries, along with a platform for investment promotion authorities. "Together with the leadership of ASSOCHAM, these platforms will provide momentum for business communities coming together, leading to better development in the Bay of Bengal region," Pandey stated.
ASSOCHAM President Nirmal K Minda outlined the organization's vision to advance connectivity, encourage MSMEs, and create new investment and innovation opportunities across member states. Saurabh Sanyal, Secretary General of ASSOCHAM, added that this milestone represents a lasting commitment to businesses across the seven nations. "Our focus is on turning intent into action through robust industry-government collaboration," Sanyal remarked.
BIMSTEC Business Council India Chair Tribhuvan Darbari emphasized the immense economic potential of the region, noting that BIMSTEC represents a USD 5 trillion opportunity. "The time is ripe to unlock this potential through deeper trade integration, stronger supply chains, and seamless connectivity. The real opportunity within BIMSTEC lies in converting policy alignment into business outcomes," Darbari asserted.
Implications for Regional Economic Growth
This leadership transition is expected to catalyze significant advancements in regional cooperation, with a focus on practical measures to enhance trade and investment flows. By leveraging the strategic agenda and collaborative platforms, BIMSTEC aims to foster a more prosperous and interconnected Bay of Bengal region, aligning with broader goals of economic resilience and development.
