India Firmly Rejects China's Renaming of Arunachal Pradesh Places as 'Mischievous Attempt'

India on Sunday categorically rejected China's renaming of places in Arunachal Pradesh, labeling it a "mischievous attempt" and asserting that such "baseless narratives cannot alter the undeniable reality" on the ground. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal issued a strong statement in response to media queries, emphasizing India's unwavering stance on the territorial integrity of the region.

MEA Spokesperson's Statement on the Issue

Randhir Jaiswal stated, "India categorically rejects any mischievous attempts by the Chinese side to assign fictitious names to places which form part of the territory of India." He further added, "Such attempts by China at introducing false claims and manufacturing baseless narratives cannot alter the undeniable reality that these places and territories, including Arunachal Pradesh, were, are, and will always remain an integral and inalienable part of India." This firm rejection underscores India's commitment to defending its sovereignty against external claims.

Impact on Bilateral Relations and Stability Efforts

Jaiswal also highlighted that China's actions undermine efforts to stabilize ties between the two nations. He remarked, "These actions by the Chinese side detract from ongoing efforts to stabilize and normalize India-China bilateral ties. China should refrain from actions which inject negativity into relations and undermine efforts to create better understanding." This statement reflects concerns over the escalating tensions and the potential for further diplomatic friction.

Historical Context of China's Renaming Exercises

This marks the sixth instance of China renaming locations in Arunachal Pradesh, a move aimed at reinforcing its claim over the state, which it refers to as 'Zangnan'. The pattern of such exercises includes:

  • In May 2025, India rejected Beijing's attempt to rename 27 places, terming it "preposterous."
  • Similar renaming efforts occurred in 2017, 2021, 2023, and 2024, often following border tensions or significant events.
  • For example, the 2017 exercise followed the Dalai Lama's visit to the state, while the 2023 attempt came after a G20 meeting hosted by India in the region.

These repeated actions are widely perceived as part of Beijing's strategy to bolster territorial claims through coercive diplomacy, creating ongoing challenges in the bilateral relationship.
