India Condemns 'Deeply Disturbing' Attacks on West Asian Gas Facilities
In a firm statement issued on Thursday, India expressed grave concern over the recent attacks on gas hubs in West Asia, labeling them as "deeply disturbing" and unacceptable. The External Affairs Ministry spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal, emphasized that such strikes must cease immediately to prevent further destabilization of the already precarious global energy landscape.
Escalating Tensions in Energy Infrastructure
The attacks, reportedly carried out by Iran, targeted several key energy infrastructures across West Asia. Among the affected sites was Qatar's critical LNG (liquefied natural gas) hub at Ras Laffan. These actions are seen as a direct retaliation to Israel's earlier strikes on Iran's South Pars gas fields, escalating regional tensions and threatening energy security worldwide.
India has consistently advocated for the protection of civilian infrastructure, including energy facilities, in the region. Jaiswal reiterated this stance, stating, "India had previously called for the avoidance of targeting civilian infrastructure, including energy infrastructure, across the region." He further highlighted that the recent incidents only exacerbate uncertainties in the global energy scenario, which is already fraught with challenges.
Global Implications and India's Stance
The implications of these attacks extend far beyond West Asia, potentially disrupting energy supplies and markets on a global scale. India, as a major energy consumer, is particularly vulnerable to such disruptions, which could impact its economy and energy security. The government's strong condemnation underscores its commitment to stability and peace in international affairs.
Jaiswal concluded by asserting, "Such attacks are unacceptable and need to cease," reinforcing India's call for restraint and dialogue to resolve conflicts. This stance aligns with India's broader diplomatic efforts to promote regional cooperation and mitigate risks to global energy infrastructure.
