India on Wednesday summoned US charge d'affaires Jason Meeks and lodged a strong protest over a US attack on a commercial tanker with 24 Indian crew members off the coast of Oman, sources said.
Attack on Tanker Settebello
Three of the 24 crew members on board the vessel went missing following the attack. The incident involved the commercial vessel Settebello, which came under attack two days after a Palau-flagged vessel with 24 Indians was targeted by the US Navy as it attempted to evade the US blockade of Iranian ports.
India's Response
In its reaction, New Delhi said that the targeting of commercial shipping and civilian infrastructure in West Asia must end, and free and unimpeded navigation through international waterways should be restored at the earliest. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) stated: "We condemn the attack on the commercial vessel Settebello off the coast of Oman, earlier today. Of the 24 Indian crew on board, 21 Indians have been rescued thus far and three Indians are reportedly missing."
Search and Rescue Operations
The MEA confirmed that the Indian embassy in Oman is closely monitoring the situation and proactively coordinating with local authorities in the ongoing search and rescue operation. India has also emphasized the need for all parties to respect international law and ensure the safety of commercial vessels and crew.
Broader Context
The attack highlights the escalating tensions in the region, particularly concerning the US naval blockade of Iranian ports. India has consistently called for de-escalation and peaceful resolution of conflicts in West Asia. The Indian government is in touch with the families of the missing crew members and is providing all necessary assistance.
This incident underscores the importance of maritime security and the protection of Indian nationals abroad. India continues to engage with international partners to ensure the safety of shipping lanes and the welfare of its citizens.
