Trichy: The Tamil Nadu Part-Time Teachers’ Federation has urged the state government to regularise 11,773 part-time teachers before filling vacant posts through the Teachers Recruitment Board (TRB).
Current Situation of Part-Time Teachers
In a representation to the government, federation state coordinator S Senthilkumar said that 3,843 part-time physical education teachers have been serving in government schools for the past 15 years without being brought under regular service. Appointed in 2012 on a monthly honorarium of ₹5,000, they now receive ₹15,000 but continue to work without regular pay scales or service benefits, he said.
Concerns Over New Recruitment
The federation expressed concern over the school education department’s reported move to fill vacant physical education teacher posts through TRB recruitment. “The announcement has created anxiety among existing part-time teachers, who fear that their years of service may be overlooked,” Senthilkumar said.
Demands for Regularization
The federation demanded that eligible part-time physical education teachers be absorbed into regular service and deployed to fill the vacancies before fresh recruitment is undertaken. It also sought the regularisation of all 11,773 part-time teachers working in subjects including art, computer science, tailoring, music, life skills, architecture and horticulture.
According to the federation, successive governments had assured regularisation of part-time teachers, but those promises remain unfulfilled. It urged the government to take a policy decision to regularise teachers who have been serving on a temporary basis for more than a decade and provide them with job security.
