India, US Move to Finalise Bilateral Trade Agreement

Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal on Tuesday welcomed US Trade Representative (USTR) Ambassador Jamieson Greer to the Department of Commerce in New Delhi, expressing anticipation for productive discussions on the bilateral trade agreement between India and the United States.

Goyal Welcomes US Trade Delegation

In a post on X, Goyal said, "Warm welcome to @USTradeRep Amb Jamieson Greer, @USAmbIndia Amb Sergio Gor and their delegation to @DoC_GoI. Looking forward to productive discussions on the bilateral trade agreement between India and US." The minister also welcomed US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor and the accompanying US delegation for being part of the ongoing talks.

US Ambassador Highlights Progress

US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor highlighted his meeting with Goyal and Greer, stating on X, "Great to be with Minister @PiyushGoyal and @USTradeRep Ambassador Greer today in New Delhi. Ongoing discussions on finalizing the trade deal between the US and India." In another post, Gor welcomed Greer to India, noting that finalisation of the bilateral trade agreement will "unlock new economic opportunities for both countries and significantly deepen the U.S.-India economic partnership."

Greer's Visit and Meeting Agenda

USTR Ambassador Jamieson Greer arrived at Vanijay Bhavan in the national capital to meet with Goyal, discussing an interim deal and the broader Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA). He was accompanied by Gor and a US trade delegation. Greer's two-day visit follows a warm meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the G7 summit in Evian, France.

Focus on Interim Agreement and Section 301

The high-level discussions focus on the United States-India Joint Statement and an Interim Agreement, part of broader bilateral trade negotiations launched by President Trump and Prime Minister Modi on February 13, 2025, according to a USTR press release. India remains engaged with the US on proposed tariff measures under Section 301 proceedings while working towards finalising a bilateral trade framework agreement.

Foreign Secretary Confirms Final Stages

Earlier, Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri stated that the interim bilateral trade pact is in its final stages. Speaking at a briefing after the G7 summit, Misri said, "With the United States, we have made significant progress already on the conclusion of an interim free trade bilateral trade agreement. We are in the final stages of concluding that agreement." He emphasised the importance of Ambassador Greer's visit to New Delhi to drive trade deliberations forward.

Greer's Travel to Uzbekistan

Following his meetings in India, Ambassador Greer will travel to Tashkent, Uzbekistan, to meet with President Mirziyoyev, Head of the Presidential Administration Saida Mirziyoyeva, and Deputy Prime Minister Jamshid Khodjaev. The USTR stated that Ambassador Greer will conduct these international meetings to discuss achieving fair, balanced, and reciprocal trade with the United States.
