India Maintains Diplomatic Outreach for Energy and Shipping Security
In response to escalating tensions in West Asia, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has affirmed that India is actively engaging with multiple countries to safeguard its energy and shipping interests. During an inter-ministerial briefing held in New Delhi on Thursday, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal emphasized the government's proactive measures to ensure uninterrupted energy supplies for the nation.
Diplomatic Efforts to Secure Energy Transit
Jaiswal highlighted that India remains in constant communication with concerned nations, including Iran, to address various issues impacting energy security. "We continue to remain in touch with all concerned countries to ensure that our energy security needs are met and our energy supplies have an uninterrupted, unimpeded transit," he stated. This diplomatic outreach aims to mitigate potential disruptions caused by the ongoing conflict in West Asia, which has raised concerns over global energy routes and stability.
Adequate Fertiliser Stocks and Diversified Imports
Addressing queries about fertiliser availability, Jaiswal reassured that India currently possesses sufficient stocks for the upcoming Kharif season in 2026. He noted that the Department of Fertilisers had issued global tenders in advance, receiving a positive response from international suppliers. "We expect the bulk of the quantities ordered from a variety of sources to arrive by the end of March," Jaiswal explained. He further elaborated on India's strategic approach, stating, "We have a diversified approach towards procuring fertiliser imports, and we continue to be in touch with several countries in that regard." This diversification helps buffer against supply chain vulnerabilities amid regional uncertainties.
Repatriation Efforts and Improving Flight Operations
In a related development, Aseem Mahajan, Joint Secretary (Gulf) in the MEA, provided an update on the repatriation of Indian citizens from West Asia. Since February 28, approximately 280,000 people have returned to India, facilitated by efforts to navigate airspace restrictions and operational challenges in the conflict-affected region. Mahajan reported that while some countries have experienced operational closures, the overall flight situation is gradually improving. "On March 18, around 75 flights operated between the UAE and India, while approximately 90 flights are expected to operate today," he said, indicating an upward trend in flight availability. Airlines are continuing to operate limited non-scheduled flights based on operational feasibility and safety considerations.
