In a powerful nod to India's rich seafaring history, the Indian Naval Sailing Vessel (INSV) Kaundinya set sail on its first international journey. The vessel departed from Porbandar in Gujarat on Monday, charting a course for Muscat in Oman. This maiden overseas voyage represents a significant initiative by the Indian Navy to resurrect and display the nation's age-old maritime traditions.
A Vessel Built with Ancient Wisdom
INSV Kaundinya is the Indian Navy's first sailing vessel constructed entirely using traditional stitched-plank techniques, mirroring methods believed to have been used centuries ago. Measuring 65 feet in length, the vessel was crafted with natural fibres and stitched construction, deliberately avoiding the use of metal nails. Its design is inspired by ancient depictions of Indian ships found in historical texts and archaeological records, creating a unique fusion of traditional craftsmanship and contemporary naval engineering.
Retracing Historic Sea Routes
The expedition, described by defence officials as a "living ocean voyage," aims to reconnect modern India with the historic sea lanes that once linked the subcontinent to the Arabian peninsula. The vessel, carrying a crew of 18 sailors, is expected to cover approximately 1,400 kilometres over 15 days before reaching the Omani coast. This route retraces ancient maritime corridors that facilitated centuries of trade, cultural exchange, and civilisational contact between India's western coast and the Arab world.
Strengthening Ties and Highlighting Heritage
The voyage was formally flagged off in the presence of senior Indian naval officials and the Ambassador of the Sultanate of Oman to India. Officials stated that the journey underscores a growing emphasis on maritime heritage within India's broader maritime strategy. The arrival of Kaundinya in Muscat is projected as a symbol of the long-standing friendship, mutual trust, and respect between India and Oman, with the expedition expected to strengthen bilateral relations by highlighting shared maritime history and reinforcing cultural bonds.
