India's iGoM Directs Departments to Maintain Readiness Amid West Asia Conflict

The informal group of ministers (iGoM), chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, has issued a directive to all government departments to sustain their focus on preparedness, coordination, and resilience building. This move aims to ensure the nation remains equipped to handle any eventualities arising from the ongoing conflict in West Asia.

Ensuring Essential Supplies and Energy Security

In a post on X, Rajnath Singh emphasized the government's commitment to maintaining the continuous availability of critical resources. This includes LPG, petrol, diesel, and fertilizers for farmers, alongside facilitating the supply of essential commodities across the country. The iGoM was informed that India has successfully evacuated the highest number of vessels from the Strait of Hormuz over the past 40 days compared to any other nation.

Specifically, eight LPG vessels, carrying approximately 340 metric tons—equivalent to around 11 days of India's import requirements—have transited the Strait. This achievement reinforces the country's energy security and supply stability during these turbulent times.

Support for Vulnerable Communities and Public Transportation

The ministers and top government officials were briefed on various measures implemented to address emerging issues. One key initiative involves doubling the supply of 5 kg free trade LPG cylinders beyond the 20% allocation earmarked for priority segments. This step is designed to support vulnerable communities, including migrant labourers, ensuring they have access to essential cooking fuel.

Additionally, oil public sector undertaking (PSU) retail pump outlets continue to dispense auto LPG to meet public transportation needs. However, an official statement noted that some supply constraints are being faced by private operators due to procurement challenges, leading to increased footfall at PSU outlets.

Monitoring and Future Measures

The iGoM was also updated on the easing of energy prices following ceasefire developments in the region. Ministers were assured that key sectoral parameters will be closely monitored, with appropriate measures to be taken as necessary to maintain stability and readiness.
