IndiGo Launches Daily Kolkata-Shanghai Flight, Strengthening India-China Air Connectivity
In a significant development for aviation and international relations, IndiGo has inaugurated a daily non-stop flight service from Kolkata to Shanghai. This marks the second direct air link between Kolkata and China, following the resumption of services to Guangzhou in October last year, also operated by IndiGo.
Expanding Air Routes and Bilateral Ties
The new flight, which took off on Sunday with 124 passengers onboard, is set to operate daily. The return flight from Shanghai to Kolkata carried 33 passengers the following day. This initiative is part of a broader effort to restore and enhance air connectivity between India and China, which had seen over 40 weekly flights between cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Kunming before 2020.
Vinay Malhotra, the global head of sales at IndiGo, emphasized the airline's commitment to connecting India to the world. He highlighted Shanghai's global significance, noting that the new service will facilitate trade, boost tourism, and foster cultural collaborations. The flight was officially inaugurated by Pratik Mathur, the consulate general in Shanghai.
Kolkata as a Strategic Gateway
Kolkata now stands as the only city in India, after Delhi, to have a direct air link with Shanghai. This positions Kolkata as a crucial gateway for travelers from eastern and northeastern India, as well as from other major cities like Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Ahmedabad, and Bhubaneswar, who can now reach Shanghai via Kolkata without multiple stopovers.
Anil Punjabi, chairman of the Travel Agents Federation of India's east chapter, commented on the improved connectivity, stating that it is expected to facilitate business travel, enhance academic initiatives, and promote tourism. He added that this development reflects the recovery of bilateral relations between India and China.
Future Prospects and Passenger Sentiment
Looking ahead, China Eastern Airlines is set to launch a flight to Kunming from Kolkata starting April 19, operating on all days except Wednesdays. This further expands the air network between the two countries. Airline officials have expressed optimism about future international expansions, with passenger sentiment reflecting a positive outlook towards these new routes.
The strengthened air connectivity is seen as a boost to the economic and cultural ties between India and China, underscoring the importance of Kolkata in the global aviation landscape.
