Indonesia Posts First Liaison Officer at IFC-IOR Ahead of Modi Visit

Indonesia has appointed its first Liaison Officer to the Information Fusion Centre-Indian Ocean Region (IFC-IOR), a multinational maritime domain awareness hub hosted by the Indian Navy in Gurugram, just days before Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the country. The posting, effective July 1, 2026, is expected to deepen maritime cooperation between the two nations.

Maritime Security Boost

The IFC-IOR, established in December 2018, serves as a regional maritime security hub that monitors and tracks commercial shipping to create a common maritime picture for partner navies. It aggregates real-time shipping data from multinational coastal radar networks, satellite feeds, and partner agencies to identify anomalies and threats such as piracy, smuggling, human trafficking, contraband movement, and illegal fishing.

With Indonesia's Liaison Officer now on board, the centre hosts representatives from 17 countries, including Australia, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Kenya, the Maldives, Mauritius, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand, the United Kingdom, and the United States. While the IFC-IOR is linked to 28 countries, the physical presence of Liaison Officers signifies a deeper level of operational integration, as they work directly alongside Indian Navy personnel at the Gurugram facility to exchange information and enhance maritime domain awareness.

Modi's Visit and Bilateral Talks

Prime Minister Modi departed on a three-nation tour on Monday, beginning with Indonesia. During the visit, announcements are expected to focus on training cooperation and potential discussions on Jakarta acquiring additional BrahMos missiles. India will offer training slots for Indonesian military cadets at the National Defence Academy in Pune, as well as mid-career courses at the Defence Services Staff College in Wellington, Tamil Nadu, according to sources.

The posting of the Indonesian Liaison Officer is seen as a strategic move ahead of these talks, reinforcing maritime domain awareness and operational cooperation in the Indian Ocean region.
