Indore Airport's Revamped Terminal 1 Set for Virtual Inauguration This Sunday
In a significant boost to aviation infrastructure in Madhya Pradesh, the renovated Terminal 1 at Devi Ahilyabai Holkar Airport in Indore will be virtually inaugurated on Sunday by Union Civil Aviation Minister K Ram Mohan Naidu. The modernized facility represents a strategic investment in decongesting the airport and enhancing passenger experience.
Major Infrastructure Upgrade with Rs 50 Crore Investment
The comprehensive renovation project, which required nearly two years to complete at a cost of Rs 50 crore, has transformed the terminal into a state-of-the-art facility spread across 6,000 square meters. Designed to handle approximately 10 lakh passengers annually, the terminal will begin flight operations from April following final security clearances.
Key features of the renovated Terminal 1 include:
- 14 modern check-in counters with streamlined processing capabilities
- Comfortable seating arrangements for 400 passengers
- Dedicated operations for 16 small aircraft (ATR-type), handling roughly 2,739 passengers daily
- Reserved lounges for both arrivals and departures
- Specialized check-in facilities for persons with disabilities
- Three state-of-the-art X-ray machines and advanced detection equipment for faster security processing
- A 150-slot car parking facility for passenger convenience
24/7 Operations Resume as Runway Repairs Conclude
In parallel development, the airport is preparing to return to round-the-clock operations after 14 months of nighttime restrictions. The Rs 25 crore runway recarpeting project for the 2,754-meter airstrip is in its final stages and will be completed by the end of March.
Since February last year, flights were halted for eight hours each night (10:30 pm to 6:30 am) to facilitate bitumen layering. "Maintaining operations on a single runway while replacing the old surface presented significant challenges, but we are now fully prepared to resume night flights in April," confirmed an airport official.
Enhanced Passenger Amenities: Café and Proposed Library
The Sunday inauguration will also mark the opening of Udaan Cafe, a new initiative designed to provide essential refreshments at rates comparable to city street prices. This development is expected to bring substantial relief to common and middle-class travelers who have historically faced inflated prices at airport facilities.
According to MP Shankar Lalwani, these improvements are part of a continuous effort to enhance the passenger experience, making air travel not just faster but also more affordable and comfortable.
To make waiting time more productive, airport authorities have proposed launching an innovative library service. Passengers will be able to browse a wide collection of books from various authors, borrow them for reading during their flight, and conveniently deposit them at their destination airport upon arrival.
The combined infrastructure improvements at Devi Ahilyabai Holkar Airport represent a comprehensive approach to modernizing regional aviation facilities, with Terminal 1 specifically designed to handle the growing passenger traffic while providing enhanced comfort and convenience.
