India has introduced an Internet of Things (IoT)-based system to monitor the movement of yaks near its borders with China and Bhutan. The initiative aims to enhance border surveillance and improve livestock management in high-altitude areas where yaks are traditionally reared.
System Implementation and Coverage
According to officials, the IoT system uses GPS-enabled collars and sensors attached to yaks to track their location and movement patterns. The data is transmitted in real-time to a central monitoring station, allowing authorities to detect any unusual activity near the border. Yaks are primarily reared in the high-altitude regions of Arunachal Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, and Ladakh, which share borders with China and Bhutan.
Benefits for Border Security
The system is expected to provide early warnings if yaks stray into sensitive areas, potentially indicating human movement or other security concerns. A senior official from the Ministry of Home Affairs stated, 'This technology will help us monitor remote border areas more effectively, leveraging the natural presence of yaks as mobile sensors.' The initiative is part of a broader effort to integrate advanced technology into border management.
Livestock Management Advantages
Beyond security, the IoT system aids yak herders by providing data on grazing patterns, health indicators, and migration routes. This can help prevent livestock losses due to harsh weather or predators. The system also supports conservation efforts by tracking yak populations in these ecologically sensitive zones.
Future Expansion
Authorities plan to expand the system to other livestock species and additional border regions. The project is a collaboration between the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology and state animal husbandry departments. With an initial deployment of 500 collars, the system is set to cover approximately 1,000 square kilometers of border area.
