Iran Thanks India for Solidarity During National Mourning

The Iranian Embassy on Monday expressed profound gratitude to the government and people of India for their solidarity during a period of national mourning following the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Hosseini Khamenei. In a statement posted on X, the embassy declared that the Iranian people would “never forget” this gesture of friendship and compassion.

Official Delegation and Political Participation

India sent an official delegation led by Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita and Bihar Governor Lt Gen (Retd) Syed Ata Hasnain to Tehran to attend the funeral ceremonies. The delegation represented the Indian government’s formal condolences and respect for the late leader.

Additionally, several prominent Indian political figures traveled to Iran independently. Former Union Minister and senior Congress leader Salman Khurshid, along with Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chief Mehbooba Mufti, were among the notable politicians present at the ceremonies in Tehran.

Religious and Spiritual Representation

The Indian contingent also included religious and spiritual leaders. Brahmachari Pragyachaitanya and Gautam Vig, representing the Art of Living Foundation, attended the funeral. Spiritual leader Sri Sri Ravi Shankar was also present, underscoring the interfaith dimension of India’s engagement.

The Iranian Embassy highlighted that this participation reflected the deep historical, cultural, and people-to-people ties between India and Iran. It also conveyed solidarity with the Iranian people during their period of grief.

Embassy's Statement of Gratitude

“The people of Iran will never forget this gesture of friendship, compassion and heartfelt respect,” the embassy’s statement said. It added that the support is regarded as a valuable foundation for further strengthening the longstanding ties between the two countries.

The embassy also thanked Indian officials, distinguished personalities, and citizens who stood with the Iranian people and offered condolences during this time of loss.

Context of National Mourning

Iran declared a period of national mourning following the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who served as the country’s Supreme Leader for decades. The funeral ceremonies saw participation from many nations, but the Indian response was particularly noted for its breadth, combining official representation with political and religious figures.

India’s gesture aligns with its long-standing policy of maintaining friendly relations with Iran, rooted in centuries of cultural and economic exchange. The embassy’s acknowledgment underscores the significance of such diplomatic and people-to-people connections during times of crisis.
