The Italian Embassy in New Delhi celebrated the 80th anniversary of the Italian Republic with a vibrant event that blended culture, partnership, and friendship between India and Italy. Minister of State for Tourism and Petroleum and Natural Gas, Suresh Gopi, attended as the chief guest, while Italian Ambassador Antonio Bartoli reflected on the deepening bilateral relationship.
A Sweet Touch of Toffee Diplomacy
The evening featured live performances by artists from an acclaimed Italian theatre company, cuisine prepared by chefs from Parma, flowing Aperol, and a viral return gift: Melody, the toffee that captured the internet's attention when Prime Minister Narendra Modi gifted it to Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni during his recent visit. Guests left smiling, taking home a reminder of India-Italy camaraderie.
Reflections on the Anniversary
Speaking about the anniversary, Ambassador Bartoli said, "We recall that the exact date was June 2, 1946, when Italian citizens, through a popular constitutional referendum, chose a republic over a monarchy. A year later, India chose the same path, and since then the two countries have followed a common journey marked by sincere friendship, which today is closer than ever. A few weeks ago, we celebrated India's return with a national pavilion at the Venice Biennale 2026. In 2027, the two Prime Ministers have decided to celebrate a Year of Culture and Tourism between Italy and India." The ambassador also highlighted the growing friendship between the two countries.
Minister Suresh Gopi's Address
Recounting his visit to Italy for the 2024 G7 Summit, Suresh Gopi said, "I was encouraged to visit some shops because Italy is renowned for its fashion and culture, so I visited Ferragamo. I bought a couple of items there, and the one I am wearing now is Ferragamo. It also reminds us of the style and wardrobe of Sophia Loren." Echoing the sentiment, he added in his address, "We will be celebrating 2027 as the Year of Culture and Tourism between India and Italy. Congratulations to the friendly people of Italy on this very special day. May our friendship continue to grow, and may the future bring greater cooperation and success to both our nations."
Cultural Performances and Personal Touches
Melody and music set the mood for the evening. Adding a personal touch to the celebrations, Ester Bartoli, the ambassador's wife, performed popular Bollywood songs with the women of the Italian Association in India. Mezzotono, renowned masters of a-cappella music, delighted audiences with rich vocal harmonies and elegance. The event also saw the presence of Belgian Ambassador Didier Vanderhasselt, US Ambassador Sergio Gor, Andrea Anastasio (Director of the Italian Cultural Centre), and other dignitaries like Seetu Kohli, Rakesh Thakore, and Kanika Ahuja.
