EAM Jaishankar Engages in Crucial Dialogue with UAE Foreign Minister on West Asia Turmoil
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar conducted a significant telephonic conversation with the Foreign Minister of the United Arab Emirates, Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, on Sunday. The discussion centered on the escalating situation in West Asia, highlighting India's proactive diplomatic engagement in the region.
Exchange of Views on Regional Dynamics
In a post on social media platform X, Jaishankar revealed that he exchanged views on various aspects of the regional situation with his UAE counterpart. This dialogue underscores the strategic partnership between India and the UAE, particularly in addressing shared security concerns amid growing instability.
UAE Air Defenses Intercept Iranian Missiles and Drones
Simultaneously, the UAE Ministry of Defence reported that its air defense systems engaged multiple threats from Iran. On March 15, 2026, UAE defenses intercepted four ballistic missiles and six unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Since the onset of these attacks, the UAE has successfully countered 298 ballistic missiles, 15 cruise missiles, and 1,606 UAVs.
The attacks resulted in tragic casualties and injuries across a diverse range of nationalities. Six individuals of Emirati, Pakistani, Nepali, and Bangladeshi nationalities lost their lives. Additionally, 142 people sustained minor to moderate injuries, including citizens from India, Egypt, Sudan, Ethiopia, the Philippines, and many other countries.
International Military Operations in the Region
In a related development, the UK Ministry of Defence conducted sorties across several Middle Eastern nations, including the UAE. Typhoon and F-35 jets, supported by Voyager air-to-air refuelling, were deployed to defend British interests and allies in Qatar, Cyprus, UAE, Jordan, and Bahrain.
Previous Incidents and Diplomatic Context
On Saturday, a drone strike targeted Fujairah Port in the UAE, igniting a fire. A well-informed Gulf analyst confirmed that the Iranian attack caused the fire from falling debris after a successful interception by UAE air defenses, with no injuries reported in that specific incident.
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump commented on the situation, stating that Iranians have reached out to him for a deal, but the terms are not yet satisfactory. This adds another layer to the complex diplomatic landscape surrounding the conflict.
Implications for Regional Stability
The conversation between Jaishankar and Al Nahyan highlights the critical role of bilateral diplomacy in mitigating crises. As tensions escalate, such engagements are vital for coordinating responses and ensuring the safety of expatriate communities, including the significant Indian diaspora in the UAE.
