Ongoing Trade Discussions as a Backdrop
The diplomatic outreach occurs against the backdrop of ongoing trade negotiations between India and the United States. Recently, US President Donald Trump, speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, expressed optimism about securing a "great" trade deal with India.
In an interaction, President Trump praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi, stating, "I have great respect for your Prime Minister. He’s a fantastic man and a friend of mine. We are going to have a good deal."
Challenges in Trade Relations
However, trade relations face challenges. Currently, Indian imports to the US are subject to tariffs as high as 50%, among the highest rates globally. A significant portion of these, specifically 25%, were imposed as additional tariffs in August 2025. The US administration had cited India's purchase of crude oil from Russia as a factor, alleging it supported Moscow's military efforts.
Despite these hurdles, both governments have consistently reaffirmed that trade talks and negotiations are actively continuing. Officials from both sides remain engaged in discussions, though a final comprehensive trade agreement has not yet been finalized.
