Mizoram MP Urges Union Govt for Rail, Highway Funds in 2026-27 Budget
Mizoram MP Seeks Rail, Highway Funds in Budget

Mizoram Parliamentarian Advocates for Strategic Infrastructure Funding

In a significant development ahead of the budget session, Mizoram's sole representative in the Rajya Sabha, K Vanlalvena, has made a compelling appeal to the Union government for substantial financial allocation in the 2026-27 budget. The parliamentarian specifically emphasized the need for funding two critical infrastructure projects that hold both regional and national importance.

Railway Project Linking Sairang to Myanmar Border

During the meeting of All Parliamentary Floor Leaders held on Tuesday, Vanlalvena presented a detailed case for the proposed construction of a railroad connecting Sairang, located on the outskirts of Aizawl, to the Myanmar border. He revealed that the preliminary survey for this ambitious project has already been successfully completed, marking a crucial first step toward implementation.

The parliamentarian underscored the strategic significance of this rail link, noting that it extends beyond Mizoram's development to encompass broader national interests. Vanlalvena called for expedited implementation of the project, highlighting its potential to enhance connectivity, boost economic activities, and strengthen border infrastructure in the northeastern region.

Addressing Traffic Congestion with Highway Expansion

Vanlalvena also brought attention to a pressing issue that has emerged following the inauguration of the Sairang rail connection by Prime Minister Narendra Modi last year. Severe traffic congestion has become a regular occurrence between Sairang rail station and Aizawl city, particularly because the station is situated along the road leading to Lengpui airport.

To alleviate this growing problem, the Rajya Sabha member stressed the urgent necessity for constructing a four-lane highway between Aizawl and Sairang. He formally sought budgetary support for this highway project in the upcoming fiscal year, arguing that improved road infrastructure is essential to complement the new rail connectivity and ensure smooth transportation for both passengers and goods.

Budgetary Implications and Regional Development

The dual request for railway and highway funding represents a comprehensive approach to infrastructure development in Mizoram. Vanlalvena's appeal comes at a strategic time, as the Union government prepares its budget allocations for the 2026-27 financial period.

These proposed projects align with broader initiatives to enhance connectivity in India's northeastern states, which have historically faced infrastructure challenges. The successful implementation of both the railway extension to the Myanmar border and the four-lane highway could significantly transform transportation dynamics in the region, potentially facilitating increased trade, tourism, and strategic mobility.

As budget discussions progress, stakeholders will be closely monitoring whether these infrastructure proposals receive the necessary financial backing to move from planning to reality, marking another step in Mizoram's developmental journey.
