President Murmu Stresses Service of Humanity at Nalanda University Convocation
President Droupadi Murmu delivered a powerful address at the second convocation ceremony of Nalanda University in Rajgir, Bihar, on Tuesday, asserting that knowledge must remain dedicated to the service of humanity. She highlighted the university's revival as a beacon of global education and its role in fostering dialogue and academic excellence.
Celebrating International Diversity and Academic Achievements
Congratulating the graduating students, Murmu noted that the batch included scholars from over 30 countries, reflecting the university's strong international character. She expressed encouragement at Nalanda University once again attracting students worldwide, signaling its emergence as a distinguished center of knowledge. During the ceremony, the President felicitated 476 graduating students, including postgraduate and doctoral scholars, and presented gold medals to meritorious students for outstanding academic achievements.
Vision for a Leading Global Academic Center
Expressing confidence in the university's future, Murmu stated that Nalanda University has the potential to become a leading academic center in Asia and globally, recognized not only for academic excellence but also for its core values. She appreciated the institution's emphasis on interdisciplinary learning, international collaboration, and engagement with local communities. Highlighting the importance of community ties, Murmu praised the "Sahbhagita Samvad" initiative, which connects the university with local communities and traditional knowledge systems, ensuring that progress benefits surrounding societies.
Dignitaries Emphasize Continuity and Global Significance
Bihar Governor Syed Ata Hasnain described Nalanda as a symbol of continuity and renewal, linking the wisdom of the past with present aspirations. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar highlighted the university's unique international character, noting its heightened role in the era of globalization. As India moves towards the vision of a "Viksit Bharat," Jaishankar stressed that future generations must stay connected with global developments, adding that international graduates from Nalanda will serve as ambassadors of India in their home countries.
Focus on Character Development and Modern Initiatives
Bihar Rural Development and Transport Minister Shravan Kumar spoke on Nalanda's historic importance, emphasizing its dedication to nurturing character and intellect beyond merely awarding degrees. Vice-Chancellor Sachin Chaturvedi welcomed dignitaries and presented the university's progress report, outlining initiatives like the LEAP (Learn, Earn and Pioneer) programme and other academic and community engagement efforts.
Inaugurations and Commemorative Events
During her visit, President Murmu inaugurated the newly built 2,000-seat state-of-the-art auditorium "Vishwamitralaya," visited the Sahbhagita exhibition, and interacted with local community members. The university expressed gratitude to the Archaeological Survey of India for preparing a replica of Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara, presented to the President as a commemorative memento. The convocation celebrated Nalanda University's commitment to blending tradition with modernity and preparing responsible global leaders for the future.
