Nashik Commuters Demand Traffic Signal Timing Changes

Commuters in Nashik city are urging the police to adjust traffic signal timings, as severe congestion forces motorists to wait through two to three signal cycles before they can cross major junctions.

Owing to the ongoing roadwork across the city, major intersections are witnessing massive traffic build-ups. Ashok Suryawanshi, a resident of the Nashik Road area who regularly travels to the main city, said he daily gets stuck in a bottleneck between Mumbai Naka and Kathegalli signal.

“The problem exists while commuting from either side. The road is already narrow and roadside parking constricts it further. By the time just three or four cars cross the junction, the signal turns red again,” Suryawanshi said.

Another commuter, Suresh Wankhede from Indiranagar, highlighted the issue of poorly placed speed breakers at certain intersections.

“When the light turns green, motorists are forced to slow down to cross the speed breakers. This drastically reduces the overall speed of the clearing traffic, causing vehicles to pile up behind them,” he said.

On being asked about the issue, DCP (traffic and HQ) Chandrakant Gavali said that signal timings can only be modified once the ongoing road works concludes.

“Increasing the green light duration for one specific road would automatically increase the red light wait time — and subsequently the traffic backup — on the intersecting roads,” he said.

“Once the road construction is complete, a comprehensive survey will be conducted to identify traffic patterns and adjust the signal timings accordingly,” Gavali added.
