Modi and Mostyn Call for Enhanced Sporting Ties
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Australian Governor-General Sam Mostyn on Thursday called for closer India-Australia cooperation in the run-up to the 2030 Commonwealth Games, which India is set to host, and the 2032 Brisbane Olympic Games. The two leaders reviewed the growing breadth of the bilateral comprehensive strategic partnership during talks in Melbourne.
The sporting partnership figured prominently in the discussions, with both leaders expressing satisfaction over expanding people-to-people and sporting ties while underscoring their potential to further strengthen the relationship between the two countries.
Review of Comprehensive Strategic Partnership
According to the Ministry of External Affairs, Modi and Mostyn exchanged views on the increasing depth and diversity of the India-Australia comprehensive strategic partnership. They welcomed the growing economic partnership and expressed confidence that expanding cooperation in trade, investment, education, and innovation would create new opportunities and deliver tangible benefits for the people of both countries.
Modi said the vibrant Indian diaspora and strong people-to-people links continued to be a key pillar of the bilateral relationship. He also appreciated Mostyn's steadfast support for advancing India-Australia ties.
Previous Day's Talks with Australian PM
The meeting came a day after Modi held wide-ranging talks with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, during which the two sides reaffirmed their commitment to deepening cooperation across trade, defence, critical minerals, clean energy, and the Indo-Pacific. India and Australia elevated ties to a comprehensive strategic partnership in 2020 and have since expanded collaboration across defence, maritime security, critical minerals, education, clean energy, and emerging technologies, reflecting growing strategic convergence between the two Indo-Pacific partners.
