Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto conferred the Bintang Adipurna, Indonesia's highest civilian honour, on Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Istana Merdeka, the Presidential Palace, in Jakarta on Tuesday. With this, Modi became the second Indian Prime Minister after Jawaharlal Nehru to receive this prestigious award.
Historic Recognition
The Bintang Adipurna is the highest class of the Bintang Republik Indonesia, awarded to individuals who have made exceptional contributions to the nation. Nehru received the honour in 1950. Modi's recognition underscores the deepening strategic partnership between India and Indonesia.
Strengthening Ties
The award ceremony took place during Modi's official visit to Indonesia, aimed at bolstering bilateral relations in trade, defence, and maritime cooperation. Both leaders discussed enhancing collaboration in the Indo-Pacific region.
According to a statement from the Ministry of External Affairs, PM Modi expressed gratitude for the honour, stating, "This award is a testament to the enduring friendship between India and Indonesia. I dedicate it to the 1.4 billion people of India."
Strategic Partnership
India and Indonesia share a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, with defence cooperation being a key pillar. The two countries conduct joint military exercises and coordinate on maritime security issues.
During the visit, several agreements were signed, including in the fields of renewable energy, digital technology, and healthcare. Trade between the two nations has grown steadily, reaching $38 billion in 2025-26.
Cultural Connections
The shared cultural heritage, including the influence of Indian epics like Ramayana on Indonesian traditions, was highlighted during the ceremony. Modi's visit also included interactions with the Indian diaspora in Indonesia.
