PM Modi Lays Foundation for Noida Airport MRO Hub to Boost Aviation Self-Reliance
In a significant move towards enhancing India's aviation infrastructure, Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for a state-of-the-art maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) hub at Noida International Airport on Saturday. This initiative marks a crucial step in making Uttar Pradesh and the entire country self-reliant in aircraft maintenance, addressing a long-standing dependency on foreign services.
Reducing Foreign Dependence and Saving Foreign Exchange
Prime Minister Modi highlighted the current challenges in India's aviation sector, noting that approximately 85% of the country's aircraft are sent abroad for MRO services. This reliance results in a significant outflow of foreign exchange, estimated to be substantial annually. "India currently depends heavily on foreign countries for aircraft maintenance. Around 85% of the country's aircraft are sent abroad for MRO, leading to significant outflow of foreign exchange," the PM stated during the event.
Emphasizing the urgent need to transform this scenario, Modi asserted that achieving self-reliance in the MRO sector is imperative for the nation's economic and strategic interests. He outlined that modern facilities are being developed across India to meet this goal, with the Noida hub being a flagship project in this endeavor.
A Pillar of 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' Initiative
The Prime Minister described the MRO sector as a vital pillar of the 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' (Self-Reliant India) initiative. He projected a future where India not only services its own aircraft domestically but also becomes a global provider of MRO services to other countries. "In the future, India would not only service its own aircraft but also provide services to other countries," Modi said, underscoring the potential for international collaboration and revenue generation.
Collaboration with Akasa Air and Operational Benefits
The first MRO facility at Noida International Airport will be established in partnership with Akasa Air, a prominent Indian airline. This advanced centre is designed to create a comprehensive network for aircraft maintenance, repair, and technical services, thereby strengthening the country's aviation industry.
