PM Modi to Attend G7 Summit in France from June 15 to 17
The French Embassy in India has officially confirmed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will participate in the upcoming G7 Summit, scheduled to be held in France from June 15 to 17. This announcement comes as External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar engages in a series of high-level diplomatic talks on the sidelines of the G7 Foreign Ministers’ meeting in France.
Key Diplomatic Engagements by Jaishankar
During the G7 Foreign Ministers’ meeting, Jaishankar held a significant meeting with France’s Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, Jean-Noël Barrot. The discussions took place at the Abbaye des Vaux-de-Cernay, where both sides warmly welcomed Prime Minister Modi’s confirmation to attend the Evian Summit. The French delegation emphasized the critical importance of India’s close association with the G7 process, particularly noting India’s current role as the BRICS presidency holder.
Both ministers highlighted India’s pivotal role in addressing major global challenges, including macroeconomic imbalances, international partnerships, and development cooperation. The talks also delved extensively into the evolving situation in West Asia, with a mutual agreement to maintain close coordination. This includes concerted efforts to secure the Strait of Hormuz, a vital maritime route, amid ongoing regional tensions.
Bilateral Meetings with Partner Countries
In addition to the meeting with French officials, Jaishankar conducted a series of bilateral engagements with counterparts from key partner nations. He met with Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand, where the leaders discussed advancing bilateral ties and reviewed the current situation in West Asia.
Jaishankar described his interaction with South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Hyun as “productive”, expressing confidence in further strengthening the partnership between India and South Korea. He also held a meeting with Japan’s Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi, noting that the discussion was a continuation of their ongoing engagement on strategic and bilateral issues.
India’s Growing Global Engagement
Jaishankar’s participation in the G7 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting with partner countries underscores India’s expanding engagement with major global groupings, even as it remains outside the formal G7 structure. The upcoming summit in Evian is anticipated to feature India playing an active role in deliberations, particularly focusing on global economic stability and emerging geopolitical challenges.
This development reflects India’s strategic diplomacy and its commitment to contributing to international forums, reinforcing its position as a key player in global affairs. The confirmation of PM Modi’s attendance at the G7 Summit signals a significant step in India’s foreign policy outreach and collaborative efforts on the world stage.
