Prayagraj Establishes Joint Committee for Comprehensive Railway Infrastructure Assessment Ahead of Kumbh 2031
In a significant move to prepare for the massive religious gathering of Kumbh-2031, Prayagraj authorities have decided to constitute a joint committee dedicated to performing a detailed gap analysis of the city's railway infrastructure. This crucial decision emerged from a high-level coordination meeting that brought together railway and civil administration officials to strategize smooth travel arrangements for the anticipated influx of millions of pilgrims.
Focus on Multi-Phase Development and Station Enhancements
The meeting meticulously identified the long-term, medium-term, and short-term development works essential for bolstering transportation infrastructure and passenger facilities throughout Prayagraj. A primary objective is the comprehensive development of major railway stations in the region to efficiently handle the heavy passenger traffic expected during Kumbh. Amit Kumar Singh, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Prayagraj Division of North Central Railway (NCR), confirmed that the proposed gap analysis will rigorously evaluate existing infrastructure and passenger amenities at key stations.
These stations include Prayagraj Junction, Subedarganj, Naini, Chheoki, Jhunsi, and Phaphamau. Based on the findings, specific plans will be formulated to upgrade these hubs with significantly improved passenger facilities. Detailed discussions covered the expansion of platforms, construction of additional foot overbridges, reinforcement of entry and exit points, and enhancement of circulating areas to manage large passenger flows effectively.
Seamless Connectivity and Advanced Technology Integration
Ensuring seamless connectivity between railway stations and the main mela area was another major focal point. Officials underscored the necessity of creating uninterrupted transport links to facilitate easy pilgrim access to the mela grounds. The coordinated operation of various transport modes, including buses and e-rickshaws, was thoroughly discussed. Furthermore, the feasibility of developing a dedicated circular road corridor linking railway stations, bus stands, and the mela area was examined as a potential solution to facilitate smooth movement and alleviate congestion.
The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and modern technologies for advanced crowd management during Kumbh was also a key agenda item. These advanced systems are envisioned to assist in estimating passenger footfall, monitoring crowd movement in real-time, and enabling authorities to manage large gatherings more proactively and safely. Officials also emphasized the implementation of an integrated communication system to guide passengers through announcements, clear signage, digital displays, and other information systems across all major transport hubs.
Major Infrastructure Proposals and Traffic Management Plans
The high-level meeting also reviewed several major infrastructure proposals aimed at transforming Prayagraj's transport landscape. Notable projects under consideration include:
- The construction of a new railway bridge over the Yamuna River near Naini.
- The development of new road overbridges and underpasses near Iradatganj and Pani Ki Tanki.
- The widening and beautification of approach roads connecting Subedarganj railway station to GT Road.
- The widening of Nawab Yusuf Road on the Civil Lines side.
- The construction of a roundabout near the Railway Hospital crossing.
In a forward-looking decision, it was resolved that both external and internal traffic management plans for Kumbh 2031 will be finalized at least one year prior to the event. This meeting was chaired by Divisional Railway Manager Rajnish Agarwal. Other senior officials in attendance included District Magistrate Manish Kumar Verma, Vice Chairman of the Prayagraj Development Authority (PDA) Rishiraj, and Additional Divisional Railway Manager Deepak Kumar.
