Russian President Vladimir Putin is scheduled to embark on a significant two-day visit to India beginning December 4, according to an announcement from the Kremlin reported by AFP on Friday. This high-profile diplomatic engagement will feature crucial discussions between President Putin and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
First Visit Since Ukraine Conflict Began
This marks President Putin's first trip to Indian soil since the Russia-Ukraine conflict commenced in February 2022. His previous visit occurred in December 2021 for the annual bilateral summit that alternates between the two nations. Prime Minister Modi participated in the most recent summit held in Moscow during July of the previous year, maintaining the continuity of this important diplomatic tradition.
Defense Cooperation Takes Center Stage
High on the agenda for the December 5 summit between PM Modi and President Putin is India's proposal to acquire five additional S-400 Triumf air-defense squadrons. The discussion will also encompass procuring substantial stocks of surface-to-air missiles for the S-400 systems already operational within India's defense network.
These advanced Russian defense systems demonstrated remarkable effectiveness during Operation Sindoor, validating their strategic value to Indian security forces. However, according to top sources who spoke to TOI, India remains undecided regarding the potential purchase of two or three squadrons of Russia's fifth-generation Sukhoi-57 fighter aircraft.
Moscow has been actively promoting the Sukhoi-57 as a viable alternative to American F-35 Lightning II jets, though New Delhi has yet to make a final determination on this significant defense acquisition.
Ukraine Conflict and Peace Efforts
The ongoing Russia-Ukraine war represents another critical topic scheduled for discussion between the two leaders. Prime Minister Modi has consistently advocated for peaceful resolution to the conflict through diplomatic channels on multiple international platforms.
Recent diplomatic engagements indicate India's continued involvement in seeking peaceful solutions. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar recently held a telephonic conversation with Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, where they discussed the latest developments in the Ukraine conflict.
Following their discussion, Jaishankar stated: "Had a telecon with FM Andrii Sybiha last evening. Appreciate his briefing on the ongoing developments related to the Ukraine conflict. Reiterated India's support for an early end to this conflict and the establishment of an enduring peace."
This high-level visit underscores the enduring strategic partnership between India and Russia, even as New Delhi maintains its balanced diplomatic approach regarding the Ukraine situation while addressing its critical defense requirements through continued cooperation with Moscow.
