Defence Minister Rajnath Singh Embarks on Key Visit to Germany to Strengthen Strategic Ties
In a significant move to bolster bilateral relations, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has commenced a three-day official visit to Germany. This high-level engagement comes just three months after German Chancellor Friedrich Merz's visit to India, which marked the 25th anniversary of the India-Germany strategic partnership.
Focus on Defence Industrial Cooperation and Make in India
During his visit to the western European nation, Rajnath Singh is scheduled to hold crucial meetings with his German counterpart, Boris Pistorius. The discussions are expected to center on reviewing ongoing defence cooperation initiatives and identifying new areas for collaboration. A key agenda item includes promoting co-production under the Make in India initiative, with the defence minister set to engage with representatives of the German defence industry to explore joint ventures and technology transfers.
The foundation for this enhanced cooperation was laid during Chancellor Merz's visit in January, when both countries signed a comprehensive defence industrial cooperation roadmap. This roadmap specifically emphasizes the co-development and co-production of advanced defence hardware, building upon existing frameworks such as the 2006 Defence Cooperation Agreement and the Inter-Governmental Cooperation (IGC).

Defence cooperation between India and Germany has deep historical roots, dating back to the 1950s. One of the earliest symbols of this partnership was the production of the Shaktiman truck, a licensed-built copy of a German MAN design. Manufactured at the Vehicle Factory Jabalpur (VFJ) from 1959 to 1996, approximately 75,000 units of this 3-ton vehicle were produced for the Indian armed forces.
Another notable example is the Dornier-228 (Do-228) aircraft, which serves as the workhorse of the Indian Air Force's light fixed-wing transport fleet. The Indian Navy and Coast Guard also extensively utilize this aircraft for maritime patrol missions, showcasing the versatility and reliability of Indo-German collaborations.
Submarine Procurement and Advanced Technologies
The cooperation extends to undersea capabilities, with India's Shishumar-class submarines originally acquired from Germany. Currently, India is in the final stages of cost negotiations with the German firm ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) for the procurement of six Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) system-equipped Type-214 diesel-electric submarines under Project-75I. These state-of-the-art submarines offer enhanced stealth capabilities by allowing longer underwater durations compared to conventional models.
In a parallel development, Hyderabad-based VEM Technologies has signed an agreement with TKMS to manufacture heavyweight torpedoes in India, further localizing defence production and supporting the Make in India initiative.
