Trump and Modi Address West Asia Crisis and Bilateral Progress in Phone Call

US President Donald Trump initiated a telephone conversation with Prime Minister Narendra Modi to deliberate on the escalating situation in the West Asia region. This discussion marked the second direct communication between the two leaders since the outbreak of conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran on February 28.

Focus on Securing Strategic Waterways and Bilateral Cooperation

The leaders emphasized the critical importance of maintaining safe and secure passage for commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz, a vital energy corridor. Prime Minister Modi, in a post on social media platform X, reiterated this point, stating that both nations are committed to keeping the strait open and secure. India has historically prioritized diplomatic engagement with Iran over military alliances to protect its tanker traffic through this key waterway.

Ambassador Sergio Gor, responding to media inquiries after the call, confirmed that the conversation also touched upon the recent US decision to blockade Iranian ports. This action followed unsuccessful peace negotiations with Iran held in Islamabad over the weekend. Gor expressed strong views on the matter, highlighting the global impact of the blockade.

"They did talk about the blockade and the importance of reopening as soon as possible. Frankly, this whole region...the whole world is suffering because of this. Why should one country be able to turn off the lights anywhere else in the world? It's unfair. It needs to stop, and the United States is determined to make that happen," said Ambassador Gor.

He further elaborated on the international implications, noting that these are international waterways governed by treaty, and the current disruptions are artificially inflating global prices.

Substantial Progress and Upcoming "Incredible Deals"

Prime Minister Modi described the call as an opportunity to review substantial progress achieved in bilateral cooperation across various sectors. Ambassador Gor revealed that both sides are working to finalize what he termed "incredible deals" in anticipation of US Secretary of State Marco Rubio's visit to India next month. Rubio is scheduled to attend the Quad foreign ministers' meeting.

While Gor did not provide extensive details on the nature of these agreements, he indicated they would involve energy and other items. He promised announcements regarding "big-ticket items" in the coming days and weeks. This aligns with President Trump's earlier announcement in February regarding a framework for an interim trade deal, under which India committed to purchasing $500 billion worth of energy and other products from the United States.

Diplomatic Context and Future Engagements

The previous conversation between Trump and Modi occurred on March 24, during intense hostilities in West Asia that later led to a two-week ceasefire. Ambassador Gor stated that President Trump's latest call was intended to update Prime Minister Modi on the evolving situation. Reports on the day of the call suggested potential further talks between the US and Iran in Islamabad later in the week.

When questioned about the possibility of President Trump visiting India for the upcoming Quad summit, Gor redirected focus to Secretary Rubio's imminent visit, expressing excitement about the engagement. He also addressed sensitive topics such as potential US extensions for India's import of Russian oil and a sanctions waiver for the Chabahar port in Iran, developed with Indian assistance. Gor declined to comment prematurely but assured that decisions would be made in due course.

A Strong Personal and Strategic Partnership

Ambassador Gor, speaking at a reception at the US Embassy, shared a personal anecdote from the call, noting that President Trump's final words to Prime Minister Modi were, "I just want you to know, we all love you." Gor emphasized the strong personal rapport between the leaders, which he believes underpins the robust state of bilateral relations.

He articulated a shift in diplomatic approach, stating, "We are in the business of delivering results, from securing resilient supply chains, building the silicon backbone of modern computing." Gor concluded by affirming that the US-India relationship is on very solid ground, with daily high-level engagements, and that together, the two nations are not merely observing history but actively shaping it for mutual benefit.

Prime Minister Modi's social media post further underscored the commitment to strengthening the Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership between India and the United States across all domains.
