Trump Reaffirms Defence Ties with India, Praises Modi

US President Donald Trump on Wednesday reaffirmed the strong defence relationship with India, stating that the United States would come to India's aid if attacked. Speaking alongside Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the G7 Summit in Evian-les-Bains, France, Trump praised Modi as a 'very tough negotiator' and hinted at a future visit to India.

Key Highlights from the Meeting

During a press briefing after bilateral talks, Trump responded to a question on the India-US defence relationship, saying, 'I think it is a great relationship — If they (India) were attacked, we would be there to help them.' He added, 'If anybody attacks that man (Modi), we are going to be there.'

Trump also emphasized India's significant role in West Asia under Modi's leadership, stating that India has a 'big role' in the region as long as Modi remains a leader.

Trade Deal Negotiations

When asked about the progress of a bilateral trade deal, Trump said the two countries were 'very close' to finalizing an agreement. He lauded Modi's negotiating skills, calling him 'one of the toughest' negotiators. In his characteristic style, Trump described Modi as 'the most beautiful looking man' who looks 'like an angel' but is 'a killer' in negotiations.

'But he looks so good, he gets you by surprise. People say he is such a nice man, I say he is very tough, he is a tough trader,' Trump said, as Modi sat beside him smiling.

Personal Rapport and Future Visit

Trump recalled the 'Howdy, Modi!' event in Texas in 2019 and Modi's reference to the 'Namaste Trump' event in Ahmedabad in 2020. Trump said he had a 'great time' during his 2020 visit to India and highlighted the large crowds that welcomed him. He confirmed, 'We will be going to India some time in the future.'

Scope of Discussions

The wide-ranging talks between the two leaders covered the proposed bilateral trade deal, defence and security cooperation, and the ongoing crisis in West Asia. The meeting took place on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in the French commune of Evian-les-Bains.

Trump's remarks underscore the deepening strategic partnership between the United States and India, with both nations committed to enhancing cooperation in defence, trade, and regional security.
