Tuticorin Airport Officially Renamed Thoothukudi in Cultural Reclamation Move
In a significant event at the airport on Saturday, Civil Aviation Minister Rammohan Naidu inaugurated the renaming of Tuticorin airport as Thoothukudi airport. This renaming, ordered by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is framed as a step to reclaim Tamil culture and reject colonial mindsets, according to Naidu.
Rejecting Colonial Legacy to Foster Tamil Pride
Minister Naidu emphasized that the previous name Tuticorin was a remnant of a system designed to make Indians feel subservient to external forces. The government aims to reestablish the Tamil pride and heritage it deserves, he stated, highlighting this move as part of a broader cultural revival.
Major Infrastructure Upgrades Unveiled
Alongside the renaming, Naidu inaugurated a new terminal building constructed at a cost of Rs450 crore. This facility is designed to cater to approximately 20 lakh people annually, significantly enhancing passenger capacity and services.
The runway has also been expanded from 1,350 metres to around 3 kilometres in length. This expansion enables the airport to accommodate larger cargo flights, which is expected to boost economic activity in the region.
Economic and Employment Impacts
Naidu noted that these upgrades have contributed to a 40% increase in air cargo traffic to and from Tamil Nadu over the last decade. The recent developments are projected to increase employment opportunities, both within the airport and in surrounding areas, supporting local economic growth.
Future Vision Under Viksit Bharat 2047
Looking ahead, Naidu mentioned the Viksit Bharat 2047 project, which aims to expand the number of airports in India to around 350 over the next 20 years. This initiative is part of a national strategy to enhance connectivity and infrastructure across the country.
