In a significant gesture of international goodwill, three prominent US states—Washington, Alaska, and Nebraska—formally recognized January 26 as the Republic Day of India. This recognition coincided with India's nationwide celebrations, marked by flag-unfurling ceremonies, grand parades, and various cultural events. The governors of these states issued separate proclamations, emphasizing the importance of this day and underscoring their commitment to strengthening bilateral ties with India.
Alaska, Washington, and Nebraska Acknowledge India's Republic Day
Alaska's proclamation highlighted that India, as the world's largest democracy, is celebrating its 77th Republic Day. The document stated, "Alaska recognizes the importance of strengthening bilateral ties with India, a nation with which we share values of democracy, innovation, and economic growth; and the Indian community contributes significantly to Alaska's cultural diversity, educational excellence, and economic vitality." It further noted ongoing partnerships in trade, technology, agriculture, and cultural exchange, fostering mutual prosperity and understanding.
Alaskan Governor Mike Dunleavy urged residents to join in the celebrations, proclaiming, "I, Mike Dunleavy, Governor of the State of Alaska, do hereby proclaim January 26, 2026, as Republic Day of India in Alaska and encourage all Alaskans to join in recognizing the contributions of the Indian community and the enduring bonds between Alaska and India."
Washington and Nebraska Follow Suit
Washington Governor Bob Ferguson signed a similar proclamation, encouraging all residents to acknowledge the achievements of the Indian and Indian American communities. He stated, "I, Bob Ferguson, governor of the state of Washington, do hereby proclaim January 26, 2026, as Republic Day of India in Washington, and I encourage all residents to join in recognizing the achievements of the Indian and Indian American communities and the enduring bonds of friendship between Washington and the Republic of India."
Nebraska also recognized India's importance, with Governor Jim Pillen proclaiming January 26, 2026, as Republic Day of India in the state. His proclamation read, "I, Jim Pillen, Governor of the State of Nebraska, do hereby proclaim the 26th day of January, 2026, as Republic Day of India in Nebraska, and I encourage all citizens to join in recognizing the contributions of the Indian community and the enduring bonds between Nebraska and India."
Additional US Governors Extend Republic Day Wishes
Beyond these three states, other US governors also extended their warm wishes to India. Montana Governor Greg Gianforte expressed heartfelt greetings on behalf of his state's people, appreciating the Indian community's contributions to Montana's cultural, educational, and economic life. In a video message, he said, "In Montana, we deeply appreciate the contributions of the Indian and Indian-American community to our State's cultural, educational and economic life. Your commitment to innovation, learning and community enriches all."
South Dakota Governor Larry Rhoden congratulated India on its 77th Republic Day, expressing confidence in the continued strengthening of US-India relations. He remarked, "Congratulations on 77th years of the Republic of India. I met with Consul General Gupta twice last year, and both meetings were very refreshing...I am confident that the United States and India will continue building an even stronger relationship."
These proclamations and messages reflect a growing recognition of India's global stature and the vital role of the Indian diaspora in fostering cross-cultural understanding and economic collaboration. They underscore the shared democratic values and mutual interests that bind India and the United States, paving the way for deeper cooperation in various sectors.
