VCK Chief Urges TVK and DMK to Join INDIA Bloc to Defeat BJP
VCK: TVK, DMK Must Join INDIA Bloc to Beat BJP

VCK chief Thol. Thirumavalavan on Thursday called on the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) and the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) to join the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) bloc to mount a more effective challenge against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) at the national level. Speaking at a press conference in Chennai, he stressed that a unified opposition front is essential to counter the BJP's electoral dominance.

Call for Unity Among Tamil Parties

Thirumavalavan argued that both TVK and DMK, despite their regional rivalry, should set aside differences and work together under the INDIA bloc. He emphasized that the BJP's strength lies in a divided opposition, and only a cohesive alliance can pose a serious threat in the 2029 Lok Sabha elections. The VCK, which is already a part of the INDIA bloc, has been advocating for broader inclusion of regional parties.

Criticism of Congress Strategy

The VCK leader also took aim at the Congress party, urging it to change its approach towards regional allies. According to Thirumavalavan, past Congress strategies have created discord with key partners like the DMK in Tamil Nadu and the Trinamool Congress in West Bengal. He noted that such friction weakens the opposition's collective strength and benefits the BJP. “The Congress must learn to treat regional parties as equal partners, not as subordinates,” he said.

Thirumavalavan’s remarks come amid ongoing discussions within the INDIA bloc about seat-sharing and alliance strategies for the next general election. The VCK has consistently pushed for a more inclusive and respectful coalition framework.

Political Context in Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu has traditionally been a stronghold of the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance, which includes the VCK. However, the emergence of TVK, led by actor-turned-politician Vijay, has added a new dynamic to the state's politics. TVK has positioned itself as an alternative to both the DMK and the AIADMK, and its stance on joining the INDIA bloc remains unclear.

Thirumavalavan’s appeal is seen as an attempt to consolidate anti-BJP forces in the state and prevent the splitting of opposition votes. He warned that if TVK and DMK remain separate, the BJP could exploit the division to gain a foothold in Tamil Nadu, a state where it has historically struggled to win seats.

Impact on National Opposition Unity

The VCK chief’s statement also highlights broader challenges within the INDIA bloc, which includes over 20 parties. Differences over leadership, seat-sharing, and ideological issues have occasionally strained the alliance. Thirumavalavan’s call for Congress to mend ties with regional allies is a reminder that internal cohesion is critical for the bloc’s success.

Political analysts suggest that the INDIA bloc needs to present a united front and a clear alternative vision to the BJP. The inclusion of TVK and a stronger role for DMK could significantly boost the alliance’s prospects in southern India. However, it remains to be seen whether the parties will heed Thirumavalavan’s advice.
