Victoria Premier Hails India as Trusted Partner

Victoria Premier Jacinta Allan declared India a country Australia trusts during a community event in Melbourne on Thursday, July 9, 2026, welcoming Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Allan emphasized the deep people-to-people ties between India and the Australian state, stating the Indian community is part of Victoria's identity.

India: A Trusted Partner

Addressing the Indian diaspora, Allan said, "India is not just a country we trade with, it is a country we trust." She highlighted Victoria's commitment to partnership with India, welcoming students, businesses, families, and ideas. The event, attended by PM Modi and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, underscored the growing strategic and economic relationship.

Indian Community Embraced

Allan assured the Indian diaspora they need not choose between their Indian identity and their Victorian home. "Your children never have to choose between being proudly Indian and proudly Victorian. In this state, you can be both," she said. She added, "Here in Victoria, you can be whoever you want to be, yet stay who you are."

High-Profile Community Event

The gathering drew around 30,000 people, possibly the largest such event in Australia by any leader. PM Modi also met several Indian community members before the programme. Earlier, Modi concluded a summit with Albanese, resulting in 18 landmark outcomes across defense, energy, critical technology, and trade, expanding the India-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

Strengthened Bilateral Ties

Allan thanked PM Modi for visiting Victoria and acknowledged Albanese's role in elevating ties. "Prime Minister Modi, thank you for honouring Melbourne and Victoria with your visit. Prime Minister Albanese, thank you for your leadership, which has strengthened Australia's relationship with the world's biggest democracy," she said. The visit marked significant cooperation in defense, maritime security, energy, critical technologies, education, mining, research, and culture.
