Wangchuk Urges Win-Win Ladakh Talks After Jail Release

Sonam Wangchuk Advocates for Constructive Dialogue After Release from Detention

In a significant development in Leh, environmental activist and Leh Apex Body (LAB) member Sonam Wangchuk was warmly welcomed by hundreds of supporters following his release from jail. Addressing the crowd on Sunday, Wangchuk adopted a conciliatory stance, urging the Union government to ensure that forthcoming negotiations with Ladakhi leaders are grounded in a "win-win" approach that benefits both Ladakh and the Centre.

Emphasis on Give and Take Without Specific Demands

During his speech, Wangchuk highlighted the importance of a "give and take" formula, carefully avoiding direct mention of key demands such as the Sixth Schedule or statehood for Ladakh. However, he made it clear that his commitment to the cause remains unwavering, stating he would continue his struggle if necessary. The reception was organized by LAB, which, alongside the Kargil Democratic Alliance, has been actively campaigning for statehood and Sixth Schedule protections for the Union Territory of Ladakh.

"My fight was for Ladakh’s people, its culture, environment, for its rivers, flora and fauna, and glaciers. Their success is my success," Wangchuk declared, as attendees displayed banners with messages like 'Justice for Ladakh', 'Withdraw Sept 24 cases', and 'Ladakh will not forget its fallen heroes'. The gathering also featured portraits of four individuals who lost their lives in police firing incidents in Leh on September 24 last year.

A New Phase for the Movement with Calls for Flexibility

Describing the ongoing movement as a "new dawn", Wangchuk announced that it is entering a "new phase" but stressed the need for "flexible steps" moving forward. He revealed that he had received assurances from the government acknowledging the September 24 firing as a mistake, with efforts underway to rectify the situation. Wangchuk expressed hope that justice would be served in the case and that all those arrested would be released promptly.

Wangchuk was arrested on September 26, 2025, under the National Security Act (NSA) and detained in Jodhpur jail. Last week, the Ministry of Home Affairs revoked his detention, reiterating the government's commitment to providing necessary safeguards for Ladakh and expressing optimism that regional issues would be resolved through "constructive engagement and dialogue".

Upcoming Talks and Future Strategies

The last round of discussions between Ladakhi leaders and the government took place on February 4 but ended inconclusively. Ladakhi representatives have since called for another round of talks to be scheduled soon. Wangchuk emphasized that Ladakhi leaders will approach these negotiations with the expectation of achieving a win-win outcome, countering rumors circulating in the region that suggest otherwise.

Keeping his strategies close to his chest, Wangchuk indicated that after the forthcoming talks, Ladakhi leaders plan to engage with people across the country to communicate whether the discussions resulted in a "win-win or a lose-lose outcome". This outreach aims to maintain transparency and keep the public informed about the progress and results of the dialogue process.
