Current Election Standings and Vote Margins

As of 12:15 PM on November 14, 2025, the electoral battle shows a clear advantage for the ruling AAP party. Shiromani Akali Dal candidate Sukhwinder Kaur is trailing significantly with a margin of 10,236 votes behind the AAP frontrunner. The competition features fifteen candidates vying for the assembly seat, with independent candidate Mandeep Singh Khalsa securing the third position with 14,432 votes.

The Indian National Congress, represented by Karanbir Singh, currently stands at fourth place with 11,294 votes, while Bharatiya Janata Party's Harjit Singh Sandhu is among the other contenders in this closely watched electoral contest.

Voter Participation and Election Background

The bye-election recorded a respectable 60.95% voter turnout during the polling conducted on November 11. This electoral exercise became necessary following the unfortunate demise of AAP MLA Kashmir Singh Sohal in June 2025, which left the Tarn Taran constituency vacant.

The counting process began at 8:00 AM today at the International College of Nursing in Piddi, where elaborate security arrangements have been implemented to ensure a smooth and transparent process. District authorities have taken precautionary measures by prohibiting assemblies of five or more persons within a 100-meter radius around the counting venue from November 11 to 14.

Political Significance and Historical Context

This bye-election serves as a crucial political test for Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and the AAP government, which has demonstrated strong performance in previous bye-elections. Since coming to power in March 2022, the party has secured victory in five out of six bye-elections conducted across Punjab.

The Tarn Taran district itself carries substantial historical importance in Punjab. Formed in 2006 as the 19th district of Punjab after being carved out from Amritsar District, Tarn Taran covers a significant area of 2,449 square kilometers and hosts a population exceeding 11 lakh people. The district is renowned for its numerous historical Gurdwaras and religious sites that attract devotees from across the region.

The final results of this significant electoral battle are expected to be declared by the Election Commission of India within the next few hours, potentially strengthening AAP's position in the state assembly and providing momentum for the ruling party ahead of future political challenges.
