Election Officials Uncover Gift Token Scheme in Coimbatore Raid
A flying squad team conducted a targeted search in Coimbatore on Saturday, leading to the seizure of 46 'gift tokens' intended for distribution to voters. The operation, spearheaded by election officer M Mangalasathya, took place at a residence on Kuppanna Street in the Pappa Naicken Palayam area, specifically within the Singanallur assembly constituency.
Tip-Off Leads to Significant Discovery
The raid was initiated following a credible tip-off received by the district collectorate's control room, prompting immediate action from the election authorities. During the search, officials not only confiscated the gift tokens but also recovered a detailed list of voters and notebooks containing extensive personal data of local residents. This evidence suggests a systematic attempt to influence the electoral process through illicit means.
Legal Action and Broader Context
In response to the findings, the Race Course police have formally registered a case against the AIADMK cadres involved. This incident is part of a concerning pattern, as just days earlier, a similar case was registered against DMK cadres near Ram Nagar. In that instance, officials uncovered evidence of the party printing and circulating Rs 8,000 'gift vouchers' to households, indicating a widespread issue across political lines.
New Trend in Electoral Malpractice
An election official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, highlighted the evolving nature of such activities. 'This has become a new trend in cash distribution,' the official stated. 'By using tokens instead of liquid cash, they attempt to bypass immediate seizure during transit. It's a logistical evolution of the Thirumangalam Formula.' This method represents a sophisticated shift in how parties may seek to circumvent election laws, moving from direct cash handouts to more covert, token-based systems.
The seizure underscores the ongoing challenges in ensuring free and fair elections, with authorities remaining vigilant against innovative forms of voter inducement. The use of gift tokens, as opposed to traditional cash, complicates detection and enforcement efforts, necessitating enhanced monitoring and swift legal responses to uphold electoral integrity.
