This uncertainty stems from the Commission's adherence to a recent Supreme Court directive, which has placed the decision-making authority in the hands of the Calcutta High Court's Chief Justice.
Supreme Court Directive and EC's Stance
On Wednesday, a senior Election Commission official responded to inquiries by stating unequivocally that the Commission would follow the directions issued by the Supreme Court of India. "The SC passed its order, which will be followed," the official declared, refraining from providing any specific dates for the publication of the supplementary list. This statement underscores the EC's commitment to judicial oversight in this sensitive electoral matter.
The Supreme Court, in its order delivered on Tuesday, explicitly addressed the publication of supplementary lists. The court stated, "In so far as the issue of publication of the supplementary lists is concerned, both sides shall be at liberty to approach Hon'ble the Chief Justice of the High Court at Calcutta for the publication of the supplementary list of the persons whose objections already stand disposed of. Once the Hon'ble Chief Justice of the High Court at Calcutta makes recommendations to this effect, the Election Commission of India shall do the needful immediately." This legal framework places the onus on the Calcutta High Court's Chief Justice to initiate the process.
Upcoming Meeting and Electoral Preparations
In a significant development, Election Commission officials are scheduled to hold a meeting with Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court, Justice Sujoy Paul, on Thursday. Sources indicate that the discussion is likely to focus on two critical areas:
- The publication of the supplementary electoral roll, which is essential for including eligible voters who have been processed but not yet listed.
- The formation of tribunals as mandated by the Supreme Court order, which will handle electoral disputes and objections.

Security and Training Initiatives Ahead of Elections
Simultaneously, the Election Commission is intensifying its preparations for the upcoming West Bengal assembly elections through robust security measures and comprehensive training programs. In a proactive move, the EC has directed central security forces to conduct area-domination and confidence-building exercises by visiting every polling booth area in the state by March 14.
"We emphasised maintaining coordination between the central forces and the state police. The central forces come to help and assist the state police. A mechanism for coordination has been prepared, and a standard operating procedure (SOP) has been put in place," the EC official elaborated. This initiative aims to ensure a secure and orderly electoral environment, fostering public trust in the democratic process.
Furthermore, the Commission conducted an extensive training program on Wednesday for senior police officers across various ranks, including Assistant Superintendents of Police (ASPs), Deputy Superintendents of Police (DSPs), Joint Commissioners of Police (Jt CPs), and Deputy Commissioners of Police (DCPs). This training is designed to equip law enforcement personnel with the necessary skills and knowledge to manage election-related duties effectively, from maintaining law and order to handling logistical challenges.
