EC Calls Trinamool Congress Meeting on Poll Issues

Election Commission Schedules Crucial Meeting with Trinamool Congress

The Election Commission of India has officially invited the Trinamool Congress for a significant meeting scheduled for Friday. This development comes after Mamata Banerjee's party specifically requested time with the poll panel to discuss ongoing concerns related to the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls currently underway in twelve states and Union territories, including West Bengal.

Official Communication and Meeting Details

In a formal letter addressed to party chief Mamata Banerjee on Monday, the election authority confirmed that a Trinamool delegation consisting of their authorized representative and four additional members would meet with top EC officials at 11 am on Friday, November 28. The Commission emphasized its commitment to maintaining constructive dialogue with political parties, stating it always welcomes regular interaction for productive discussions.

The meeting was arranged following a formal request made by Trinamool leader Derek O'Brien, who wrote to the EC on Sunday seeking an appointment for a delegation of party MPs. The Commission acknowledged this request and promptly scheduled the upcoming interaction.

Background of the Concerns

This proposed meeting occurs against the backdrop of two significant issues raised by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in her recent communication to Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Banerjee had demanded immediate intervention regarding matters she considers critical to the electoral process.

The first concern involves the state Chief Electoral Officer's directive to district election officers prohibiting the engagement of contractual data-entry operators and Bangla Sahayata Kendra staff for the Special Intensive Revision (SIR), voters' list cleanup exercise, or any other election-related work.

The second matter revolves around the Election Commission's proposal to establish polling booths inside private residential complexes, a move that has raised questions and concerns from the ruling party in West Bengal.

With the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls progressing in multiple states, this meeting between the Election Commission and Trinamool Congress delegation represents a crucial step in addressing electoral process concerns and maintaining transparency in India's democratic system.
